Pediatric Eye Exams

Orange County Pediatric Eye Care

Children can experience many of the same vision issues as adults, such as farsightedness, astigmatism and nearsightedness. Other problems that are common among children are conditions such as amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (crossed eyes). These can impact proper vision development. Eye exams for children are very important in order to treat any vision problems that may affect future vision.

Saddleback Eye Medical Associates is a leading pediatric eye care facility, providing excellent services for children and the entire family. Our board-certified ophthalmologists and optometrists have the education, training, and experience to provide pediatric eye care exams and treatment. Since 1979, our team of eye doctors has taken pride in building lasting relationships with our patients and providing the utmost inpatient care.

Children’s Eye Exams

Children should have their first eye exams around the age of two, although it is never too early to test a child’s eye health. During your child’s eye exam, our pediatric specialist will test for the following:

  • Visual acuity
  • Eye alignment
  • Focusing skills (important when reading)
  • Overall eye health

Childhood exams also detect problems such as amblyopia, strabismus (crossed eyes), color blindness, and can help detect dyslexia.

Warning Signs & Risks for Vision Problems in Children

If you notice signs of vision problems, you should take your child for an eye exam as soon as possible. Some common signs that may indicate vision problems in your child may include:

  • Squinting, closing, or covering one eye
  • Constantly holding materials close to the face
  • Tilting the head to one side
  • Rubbing eyes repeatedly
  • One or both eyes turn in or out
  • Redness or tearing in eyes
  • History of premature birth
  • Developmental delays
  • Family history of “lazy eye” or glasses before 6 years of age for a family member
