What are Cataracts?

Developing a cataract is just as normal and expected as any other change in the aging process. A cataract is the result of a natural change occurring inside your eye; a gradual clouding and hardening of your lens that can make your vision foggy and blurry over time.

Cataract development begins when proteins in the lens begin to cluster together, forming dense and solid clumps. As time goes by, these protein clusters will eventually cloud your lens, limiting light to pass through. The small amount of light that does make it to the retina is dispersed and scattered, making your vision out of focus. Leaving cataracts untreated may lead to a complete loss of vision.

Symptoms of Cataracts

• Blurred vision is the earliest and most common signs of cataracts.
• Faded or dull colors. Colors seem less vibrant and vivid, and shades become more and more difficult to differentiate.
• Poor night vision. As your cataracts develop, you will find it more and more difficult to see objects in dim light.
• Sensitivity to light. Lights may seem extremely bright, and/or have a halo effect.

Vision Correction at All Distances

Previous standard lenses were only able to correct for near or far vision, leaving patients needing glasses for one or the other. However, with the AcrySof® ReSTOR® Multifocal developed by Alcon (the world’s leading eye care company), a premium intraocular lens is now available to correct vision at all distances. The AcrySof® ReSTOR® Multifocal Lens has multiple focal points to correct near, intermediate, and distance vision.

Vision Correction for Astigmatism Patients

The AcrySof® Toric® IOL is a lens with a single focal point that can correct not only your cataract, but your pre-existing astigmatism. The Toric® IOL creates excellent distance vision without the help of glasses or contact lenses for astigmatism patients.

• Patients return home the very same day.
• Eye drops may be prescribed to avoid infection and to help with the healing process.
• You will need to wear dark, polarized sunglasses for light sensitivity.
• Most patients are back to their routine activities within a few days of recovery.
